Sprawled out along the coast of the Red Sea, old homes and sprawling skyscrapers compose Saudi Arabia’s second largest city, Jeddah. The city is recreating itself as an entertainment capital revitalizing its historic homes and building up its coastal walkways with an F1 race track and commercial shopping area. Its heritage is renowned as the gateway to Mecca, the most significant pilgrimage of Islam. The port city was once the full of pilgrims preparing and resupply ing before their hike 50 mile hike up into the holiest city. The city was full of contrast. my first day I wandered through the maze of the old town admiring Jeddahs ancient architecture. The second day took me up the coast to see the shiny skyscrapers that snake their way along the corniche. We were hesitant to go given all we’ve read about the country. During our journey to 100 countries and beyond, we will undoubtedly visit countries where we don’t agree with certain laws or practices, and personally, we don’t want this to stop us from going. After all, how can we build understanding if we refuse to meet people, or are not open-minded enough to talk to someone who might disagree with us? We need more understanding, respect, and international cooperation, not greater divides. Our intention has always been to use our platform as a personal diary to look back on, and we want to take every opportunity we can to grow and learn more about the world. Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast. In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day. This is the first episode of a 6 part vlog style series about my journey through Saudi Arabia. The day before the Saudi National Day, we went to the Al Bawadi market in Jeddah in search for everything green to dress up for the event. At the Al Bawadi market, they sell all sorts of clothes, shoes, bags, and lots of outfits and decorations for Saudi National Day at bargain prices. After an eventful shopping spree at the market, we made a quick stop at the huge World of Savings shop, where we somehow ended up buying a lot of things. On Saudi National Day, we caught an Uber to the Promenade, which is located in North Jeddah along the water of the Red Sea. The Promenade was very busy with lots of people and activities. After a walk up to the Yacht Club to see the parade of the National Guard, it was time to admire the amazing display of fireworks along the water at 9pm. Both Kylie and Ella got some green and white face painting after the fireworks, before we walked towards the New Jeddah (North) Corniche. We asked some nice Saudi guys to show us where the festivities were along the North Corniche. When arriving there, things got a little hectic. There were large gatherings of young people, which seemed very excited and fascinated by our presence and us vlogging, so we ended up getting so much attention that a police officer had to come to our rescue to guide us to the “safety” of Tim Hortons, where we had a nice refreshing drink and a well-deserved rest before heading back to our hotel in Jeddah. It was certainly a night to remember, so join us in this vlog to see our experiences and reactions to the crazy hustle and bustle of the festivities and crowds on the 93rd Saudi National Day. Blonde White Sportswoman travels to the Middle East for Work. Kinda niche, huh? On the 25th September I travelled to Dammam, Saudi Arabia with KPMG. For background, I joined on 10th October 2022, exactly one year ago today actually wow, that's cool, in the Finance Transformation space as a Graduate Consultant. A few weeks back, a position opened up on this amazing project and guess who happened to slide straight into it! After a couple hours of deliberation I decided to move half of my time to Saudi until early next year and let me tell you, it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I know this will seem silly to most people, but I never thought I'd leave the UK again until recently. I literally cried in business class to Logic's 1-800-273-8255 as the final flight landed. Sorry business men, I am an emotional girl. This vlog is complete chaos, and not the controlled kind. So, thank you for clicking on it, and good luck on getting through it. I'm feeling very full of luck and love right now. I work my ass off but I also feel eternally blessed to have experienced what I have over the last couple weeks. A couple of sidenotes: 1) Client / work related matters are not discussed 2) I went to Doha for the weekend between the two working weeks (hence the less clothes) 3) I am 3kg up from this trip because I basically did a 10k calorie challenge every day, not all food is shown. Weight gain is a tricky subject, but I would've hated myself if I didn't try all of the foods that I did (and just every pudding ten times). I think I've got the 'I must have everything' out of my system now haha. 4) Any questions, throw them my way and I will try answer them during the next installment commencing Saturday 14th... 5) I didn't actually climb so my shoes stunk out the business lounge for no reason, but next week I promise I will go! Today I’m taking you on an ultimate local Saudi Arabian food tour of Riyadh, we’ll be eating some of the greatest dishes, food you don’t want to miss! Here are all the locations featured in this food review: 1. Fawal Abo Salem (🤍 - We’re beginning this Saudi Arabian food tour in Riyadh with a staple breakfast - ful - mashed fava beans that likely originate in Egypt, but are widely popular throughout the entire region. Ful medames at Fawal Abo Salem for breakfast is some of the best in the entire city - and I was blown away by the quality and flavor, paired with the freshly baked bread. 2. Camel liver - I’m not totally sure of the name of this place, but they are famous for their fried camel liver, sauteed down with onions and peppers. It’s truly tasty, right off the hot griddle with fresh bread and a dash of hot sauce. 3. Alnaqaa Falafel & Hummus (🤍 - To eat the best Falafel and Hummus and Riyadh, you have to go to Alnaqaa - it’s absolutely legendary, and it felt as though I was right back on the streets of Beirut. One of their specialties is a giant falafel stuffed with caramelized onions. And make sure you order the entire falafel mountain! 4. Kebda Restaurant (🤍 - This Riyadh food tour is not complete with only camel liver - another popular liver to eat is lamb liver, and this time it’s not served on a plate, but with bread, sandwich style. Some of the tastiest lamb liver you’ll ever try! 5. Sudah Restaurant (🤍 - To begin this food tour and to end this food tour, it was a privilege to spend some time at Sudah Restaurant to learn about Haneed, an Arabian food that at this restaurant originates from Aseer Province. They still make it the traditional way, loading parted out young lambs into an underground oven, layered with a specific type of hay that holds in the moisture and gives a distinct fragrance. The result is smokey lamb served over a mountain of rice, that literally melts in your mouth with the smoky fragrance of the hay. It was an unforgettable meal experience in Saudi Arabia!
