The Real Threat to American Democracy | NYT Opinion

For the past two years, Americans have been overwhelmed by a deluge of headlines suggesting democracy in the United States is under threat: Voter suppression. A shortage of drop boxes. Election deniers seeking key state offices. It can be difficult to gauge what stories suggest a truly terrifying threat to democracy, and which are simply disheartening or even petty. The Opinion Video film above aims to unpack one of the most dire threats to democracy, which includes a sophisticated plot to control not only who can vote, but which votes get counted. One thing is certain: The 2020 race was not stolen. But Mr. Trump and his Republican enablers have been working to rig future elections to their advantage. (Of course it’s the people shrieking most loudly about fraud that you really need to watch.) The former president has convinced his followers that the electoral system has been so corrupted that the only way to save America is for MAGA patriots to take over the system to ensure that the “right” candidates win going forward. His allies have been busy engineering such a legal takeover, and key pieces of the plan are already in place. In this short film, we shine a light on those machinations, so that those who care about democracy can act to stop them. For our Democracy to survive, we need to agree on a shared reality and for the losers — that is those who lose in honest and fair elections — to accept defeat. Why US democracy is still in danger: the fight to vote

The new Georgia voting rights law makes it harder to vote, especially for communities that tend to vote for Democrats – and that's what Republicans want. But it's not just Georgia: these restrictive voting laws are being considered in nearly every state in America, from Arizona to Texas to Florida. Subscribe to The Guardian on YouTube ► 🤍 These efforts come on the heels of the 2020 presidential election, which Republicans lost by slim margins in several states. Many Republicans claimed they lost because of voter fraud – because people who were ineligible to vote found a way to skirt the rules and cast ballots. Election officials around the nation said there was no widespread fraud, but Republicans are using this argument to push for a wide array of laws that will skew election in their favor. If enacted, Americans will have to ask a hard question: is the US still a democracy? US midterms: Control of congress and democracy on the line

In the US, control of both the House and Senate are in play. (Subscribe: 🤍 This is the first election since the January 6th raid on Capitol Hill last year. It reminds America and the world just how fragile this powerful democracy can be. Once again the president's party is likely to lose its hold on the House. It happened to Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump. The benign view is that this creates a divided government, clipping a president's wings. But it also grinds government to a halt and in an increasingly toxic and tribal landscape it could unleash a flurry of investigations and impeachments, More than 40 million Americans have already cast their ballots early - and millions more are heading to the polls today. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are on the ballot - where the Democrats face an uphill battle to hang onto control, as well just over a third of the 100 Senate seats. It's on a knife edge - the Republicans need to gain just one seat to take control there. Americans in 36 states are also electing governors - as well as numerous city mayors and state legislatures. One of the tightest Senate races is in the southern state of Georgia. - Follow us on Instagram - 🤍

The US Democracy. How Does it Work?

04.07.2017

The United States has always been known for being the leading country when it comes to democracy. The US democracy has been around for the past 230 years which makes it the oldest democracy in the entire world. It has paved the path for security, stability and freedom of speech for the people in the US. It is therefore important to explore the pillars of US democracy and understand how it functions. Don’t forget to subscribe and join our notification group. The modern US democracy was established after the end of the American revolution in 1783. Having a king was not acceptable by the founding fathers and the American people. A new system was needed back then to build a solid foundation for fairness and stability in the US. In 1787, the new constitution was introduced by the founding fathers. Ironically, the constitution would later on set the path for modern democracy yet it does not mention the word “democracy” even once. The constitution required the establishment of three independent branches in the US government that would have distributed authority and power. Now let’s jump into each of these three branches and explore how they work. Lets start with the legislative branch. This branch was established by Article I of the Constitution. It includes both the House of Representatives (which is made of 435 members) and the senate (which is made of 100 senators). These two components are called the United States Congress and function in the US Capitol Building. The US congress is in charge of creating laws, various presidential appointments, passing the national bill, significant investigative powers and declaring war. The republican party currently has the majority in members in both the House of representatives and the Senate when compared to the democrats. This would make the agenda of Donald Trump the current president of the united states that much more achievable since he was the republican presidential nominee. For example, passing a new health care bill would have better odds in this case. Next, the executive branch. This branch was established by Article II of the Constitution. Leading this branch are the president and vice president that are responsible for enforcing the laws passed by the legislative branch. The president often requires advice from a group of experts known as the cabinet. The cabinet specializes in different areas to provide the president with the most suitable advice and knowledge. The executive branch is entitled to commanding the US armed forces, communicate with leaders of other countries in addition to overseeing national security and treasury matters. The Executive Branch employs more than 4 million Americans. That would include the arm force members of course. This enormous number of people would ensure that the tasks of the executive branch are achieved. Finally, the judicial branch. This branch was established by Article III of the Constitution. It includes both the federal district courts and US supreme court. In other words, all the courts in the United States function under this branch of US government. Members of this branch are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. This branch is concerned with the interpretation of the US laws and make sure that everyone commits to them. Of course, the courts are also responsible for punishing those who break the law. The number of Supreme Court Justice members is determined by congress and is currently at nine members including eight Associate Justices and one Chief Justice. These three branches of the government collectively set the framework of living in the united states and underline the US democracy. Conspiracy theories and misinformation are influencing political beliefs in the U.S. like never before. False claims that the 2020 election was stolen, have some American voters justifying the violence that unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Some researchers worry there could be more violence if voters don’t accept the results of the midterm elections this November. #USMisinformation #ConspiracyTheories #USDemocracy Watch The National live on YouTube Sunday-Friday at 9 p.m. ET Subscribe to The National: 🤍 Connect with The National online: Facebook | 🤍 Twitter | 🤍 Instagram | 🤍 More from CBC News | 🤍 The National is CBC's flagship nightly news program, featuring the day's top stories with in-depth and original journalism, with hosts Adrienne Arsenault and Andrew Chang in Toronto, Ian Hanomansing in Vancouver and the CBC's chief political correspondent, Rosemary Barton in Ottawa.

As the midterm elections approach, the US President said that democracy is under attack because Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 ballot. Joe Biden warned Americans that "MAGA Republicans" - a reference to Trump's Make America Great Again slogan - have "fuelled the dangerous rise of political violence and voter intimidation over the past two years". The President was speaking just days before the midterm elections, where seats in the House of Representatives and Senate are being contested. #skynews #usa #joebiden #donaldtrump #midterms SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for more videos: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Instagram: 🤍 Follow us on TikTok: 🤍 For more content go to 🤍 and download our apps: Apple: 🤍 Android 🤍 Sky News videos are now available in Spanish here/Los video de Sky News están disponibles en español aquí 🤍 Sky News videos are also available in German here/Hier können Sie außerdem Sky News-Videos auf Deutsch finden: 🤍 To enquire about licensing Sky News content, you can find more information here: 🤍

Is voter suppression threatening US democracy? | UpFront

American democracy is in peril. That is the warning from voting rights defenders ringing the alarm over measures being introduced in many parts of the country that, they insist, threaten the most fundamental right of citizens in the United States: the right to vote. From gerrymandering to voter suppression, there has been a slew of laws pushed through state legislatures and courts aimed at curtailing people’s ability to have their voices heard in electoral politics. In the run-up to the November midterm elections, Marc Lamont Hill is joined by Ari Berman, author of, Give Us the Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America; LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter; and Sarah Brannon, managing attorney of the ACLU Voting Rights Project for an UpFront Special on voter suppression and its effect on democracy in the US.
