Reviewing Apple's Macbook Pro M1 laptop, 13-inch model with 16GB of RAM and 1TB storage, to see how it handles video editing, gaming and other intensive tasks. I've been testing the new 2020 Macbook Pro with the M1 chip for two months, comparing vs the older Intel models, and that performance is definitely over-hyped. If you play the game by Apple's rules, using only optimised software and the company's own codecs, then this creator notebook is a fine rival to Dell's XPS 13 9310 and other Tiger Lake laptops. However, third party apps usually run like a dog and even Final Cut Pro broke down on the Macbook Pro M1 at times. Gaming is possible, but only if you keep detail levels low - otherwise again you'll have a less than smooth experience. Still, one area where this laptop really impressed was the battery life. I could edit video and photos and work in Chrome for almost ten straight hours before the Macbook needed a recharge. That's definitely strong vs most Windows rivals with Intel platforms, including the Dell XPS and Microsoft's Surface devices. That's my review of Apple's new 2020 M1 machine - it's 'Pro' alright, but it's not a game changer. If you've been using the MacBook Pro as we hit 2021, let me know your thoughts down below!

I’ve had this M1 Pro base model Macbook pro since it’s day one launch, and its been my main laptop ever since, But now after a year, I think I’ve really figured out what I like about this laptop, what I’ve disliked, and just about everything in-between. Let’s get started with a long term review. I use it to edit a significant chunk of my videos, I use it to plan out my next videos, I use it to edit YouTube thumbnails, and to do boring stuff we all need to do to survive, like pay bills, create documents and spreadsheets, write emails and do my taxes. All the different ports on the Pro have been absolutely fantastic for my own workflow. For example, if I’m editing a YouTube video, I have a magsafe charger plugged in, an sd card, and an external SSD. Leaving me with 2 usb-c ports still open for use. All these ports fill up when I’m video editing with 2 external monitors but that’s when I’m in “power user” mode. The body of the laptop itself has held up pretty well, I have only minor scuffs on the lid, the rubber feet and a little around my most frequently used ports. The keyboard builds up finger oils and then starts to look a little shiny, but this is what all macbooks deal with and will get worse overtime. On my other usb-c macbooks, I found that after a while, the usb-c ports become less responsive, maybe because the older macbooks only had 2 usb-c ports for charging, dongles and peripherals so they were always in use, but on this one, they’ve been very consistent. The notch, while you know it’s there, fades into the background and honestly, I stopped noticing it after a week of owning this thing. The Mini-led pro-motion display is still probably the nicest looking display I have in the entire house. The combination of how bright it gets, the resolution and refresh rate, makes it enjoyable from watching movies, to making videos to just everyday usage, paying your bills, and google sheets never looked so good. And in real-word usage, I never see Mini-LED blooming, since I rarely have the display brightness all the way up to notice. The laptop doesn’t really get warm during general usage, and is normally just room temperature even when I’m using it on my lap. If I’m using it and the laptop is just sitting on the couch, it obviously gets warm but never enough to get the fans reving up. During video editing in FCPX it does get warm but even then I don’t really hear much fan noise coming out of this macbook. Overall, outside of the fanless macbooks, this has been one of the quietest macbooks I’ve owned. Since ownership I don’t think I’ve experienced many instances where I throw something at the macbook pro and it can’t handle it. My time spent between the m1 pro macbook pro and the mac studio is pretty 50/50 but even then, 95% of the things I do on the mac studio, could probably just be done on the macbook pro. This laptop has really been my workhorse and I never felt like I needed more power than what I already have here. For video editing, I’m often editing 2-4 streams of 4k .264 video with light color grading in FCPX, I don’t use any proxies either and it cuts through the raw footage like butter. This has been my favorite on-the-go editing machine. Battery life is good, even after a year, but I find that while asleep the macbook pro doesn’t seem to last anywhere near as long as my old M1 air did and needs to be charged more often if left to sleep for days. It’s a shame that with the transition to Apple silicon, Macs no longer can run windows natively. And that’s definitely affected my habits. Before I would use bootcamp to just store a small windows partition with all the casual windows only games I’d like to play if I’m itching enough to reboot into windows. But The M1 Pro is decent at running windows in a VM but obviously, it’s not perfect and certain software like Genshin just doesn’t run well in a VM. #AnkerHub #AnkerforApple

I don’t think most people should buy the 13” M1 MacBook Pro - it’s just not one of my favorite options. The M1 MacBook Pro IS a good laptop, but I can’t recommend it anymore. It’s been my go-to machine to get all my youtube related work done. So, today, we’re gonna talk about how the body of the machine has held up, it’s impact on my user experience, and well, if it’s a purchase I would make again today. Let’s get started with a longer term review. First, let’s look at how the body of the 14in Macbook pro has held up. Apple laptops are known for their sturdy-feeling aluminum build. For the 14in MacBook pro. The body has held up pretty well. The hinge still works as intended, and all of the ports still function just as they did on day one of owning this machine. In comparison, my previous M1 MacBook air was dealing with one of the USB-C ports not reliably working or charging at this point. I replaced an M1 Macbook Air for the 14in MacBook Pro, which takes everything I loved about that machine, then literally doubled it. The 120hz refresh rate display makes scrolling and general usage feel butter smooth. Yes the notch on top exists, but in the real world, it just fades into the background of what you’re doing. Battery life will last you all day or more, and while I did only get the cheaper 67 watt power adapter, it charges fast enough and you don’t have to use magsafe with it. And the mini-led display is really nice to look at and in day to day mixed usage you don’t really notice any kind of blooming. The speakers still put most other non-macbook laptop speakers to shame. To be honest I can’t really find anything within my own use cases that really makes this machine struggle. Having multiple 4K displays plugged in, and dozens of tabs open are no struggle for the MacBook pro, and editing 24mp photos in Affinity photo always goes without a hitch. So from a content creator viewpoint. This machine feels almost perfect. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things the MacBook pro isn’t great at. It’s been a year and a half since Apple’s transition from Intel CPUs to their own ARM-based Apple Silicon chips, and a large majority of popular apps are Apple Silicon optimized now, meaning, they’re taking the change in architecture to maximize performance and compatibility of these machines. That being said, this change has also limited the functionality and performance of the M1 Pro MacBook Pro and all Apple silicon machines in some ways. The first is you can no longer natively run Windows through bootcamp, but you can use windows through virtual machines with software like Parallels, but you’d still have to emulate x86 apps, meaning a hit on performance and the second, is that gaming on the mac is still not ideal, with most games unavailable on the Mac, or written for the old intel Macs. And while you can download ios games and apps on apple silicon macs, they aren’t optimized for mice and pointers, and games that I’d want to play, like Genshin Impact, are unavailable. And the ports. The cheaper Macbook Air and 13in Macbook pro only have 2 Usb-c ports. And because of that, workloads that require a ton of external devices are difficult to execute on those machines. The ports fill up and they fill up fast. On the 14in Macbook pro, I’m able to just forget about the dongles altogether and know that I’ll have all my needs covered or with minimal swapping. With the 14in macbook pro, it’s hard to look you in the eye, and say owning this thing has been a pain, because it’s been nothing but fantastic. It has long battery life that’s still going strong, all the different ports are back, $2,000 is a lot to spend on a laptop, especially one that to this day is in high demand. The display is nice to look at, the build of the machine feels nice in the hand, and in my day to day workflow, I can’t find anything that I use it for that really causes the macbook pro to struggle. It will handle 95% of people’s workloads just fine. The display makes it great for media consumption, the speakers sound good, the battery life is great, the performance is great, it rarely gets loud, and rarely gets hot. This might be the best all-around laptop Apple has made in years.
