Yusha Evans was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina in a very conservative Christian home. In his early teens he became heavily involved in the church near his home and in Young Life, a non-denominational youth oriented organization with the intention of becoming involved in the ministry of teaching and preaching. After many twist and turns, ups and downs and after looking at the many world religions searching for the tangible proof of the right way of life he encountered a Muslim, and was given a Qur’an. After reading the Qur’an cover to cover he accepted Islam. The Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said: "One of the Prophets made a holy war. He said to his followers: One who has married a woman and wants to consummate to his marriage but has not yet done so; another who has built a house but has not yet erected its roof; and another who has bought goats and pregnant she-camels and is waiting for their offspring-will not accompany me … " This Prophet did not want any person to come with him whose heart may be attached to anything else. This is a Prophet who is not looking for numbers but rather for ikhlas (sincerity). The Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, continued: " ... So he marched on and approached a village at or about the time of the Asr prayers. He said to the sun: You are receiving orders and I am receiving orders from Allah, O Allah stop the sun! It was stopped for him until Allah granted him victory." We know this Prophet was Yusha ibn Nun because of a separate narration recorded by Imam Ahmad in which the Prophet, sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said: "The sun has never stopped for any man besides Yusha when he wanted to conquer Bayt al-Muqaddis." "None of the ones who worshipped the calf entered into Jerusalem." Have you not considered those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, "Die"; then He restored them to life. And Allah is full of bounty to the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude. 2:243 Mohammad Ibn Ishaaq stated of Wahb Ibn Munbah said that when Allah took Kalih Ibn Yofra (Jephtha) after Joshua, Ezekiel Ibn Buzi succeeded him as the prophet to the Israelites. The people had fled from Palestine for fear of the plague and settled on a plateau. Allah said to them: "Die you all," and they all perished. A few centuries passed, and then Ezekiel, passing by, stopped over them, wondering. There came a voice: "Do you want Allah to resurrect them while you watch?" He said: "Yes." Then he was commanded to call those bones to join one to the other and to be covered with flesh. So he called them by the power of Allah, and the people arose and glorified Allah in the voice of one man.

This is the maqam/shrine of Prophet Yusha (عليه السلام), a Prophet who was very close to Prophet Musa (عليه السلام) and took his place as the leader of the Bani Israil after his death. He is known as Joshua in the Bible. Prophet Yusha (عليه السلام) was the great grandson of Prophet Yusuf (عليه السلام), his full name being Yusha bin Nun bin Afraeem bin Yusuf. Although he is not mentioned by name in the Holy Quran there are references made to him in two places. After the Bani Israil fled bondage in Egypt and wandered the desert for 40 years Musa (عليه السلام) died close to Bayt al-Maqdis, often referred to as ‘The Promised Land’. Yusha (عليه السلام) took over and led the Bani Israil over the River Jordan and into the surroundings of Jericho (also known locally as Ariha). It was a splendid city with large palaces. He laid siege over it for six months and then with a final push, raising the takbeer, he led his army in and conquered it. It is said that when they were about to take the city of Jerusalem it was on a Friday at Asr time. The sunset was close approaching which would subject them to the observance of the sabbath (on Saturday), meaning that they would have had to cease fighting. Yusha (عليه السلام) addressed the sun that it was under a command while he was under another command and he prayed to Allah, “O Allah, hold it back from setting!”. It was stopped till Allah made him victorious. A hadith has been narrated from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, ”Surely, the sun has never been stopped from setting down for a human being except for Yusha (عليه السلام) on the evening he invaded the Bayt al-Maqdis.” The Bani Israil lived in the Bayt al-Maqdis for some time and Yusha (عليه السلام) taught them the Torah and ruled according to it.
