Once again letting my predilection for Jerry Herman get the better of me, clips from a December 1985 in-house tape of the Australian production of La Cage Aux Folles. The formidable Keith Michell plays Georges, offering a characterisation even more endearing, charismatic and charming than Albin, played here by Jon Ewig. Seen is the extravaganza of the opening number, followed by "With You on My Arm" (11:48), "Song on the Sand" (17:18), and "Masculinity" (23:26). The audiences' ecstatic reactions are as apparent as they were on Broadway, of which this production was a complete replica, with the addition of Mr Michell's melodic elocutionary bravura.
I saw this production 3 times...it was fabulous.......what an amazing production......so hoping to see it again here in Australia.....Brisbane?
This was my first listening experience to this fabulous musical when I migrated to Australia in 1981
Keith Michell has an absolutely wonderful singing voice. Perhaps even better than American born singer and actor ,Gene Barry
This recording was made at the last night of the show in Melbourne. The Australian producers were doing the show in London and the whole show was recorded to show the London crew just how the show worked.
This is amazing ... Saw this production 8 times..... It looks as though the footage is from The Maj theater camera.. I'm hoping you may have the whole show...... If so.. could you put up the finale???? Thanks for putting this up....
Wow. This is the production I saw in Sydney all those years ago. I do hope there is more material as a good friend played Hannah, and although it is not the clearest image, he is recognisable even in Masculinity. This is a wonderful memory for me. John Ewing (sic) was also stunning
Thank you so much for posting. I went and saw this show as a twenty year old and it made a huge impression on me. It's something I'll never forget. This footage brought back so many memories and put a huge smile on my face. I even still have the souvenir programme and LP soundtrack of this show and play the music often. I just wish I knew how to make it into a digital recording.
The best part of this is seeing Mr. Michel getting the reception he deserves.
So glad you posted this! Last year I had finally found a video of the original Australian cast recording with Mr. Michell, for which I'd been searching for years but it seems to have been taken down again. Anyway I can't find it, so I'm very grateful for this!

I remember seeing the original L.A production with original cast member Gene Barry. My heart started to race during the overture when you realized you your actual entering La Cage Aux Folles, the night club. Such a special show
The Divine Keith Michell!!! That matchless voice. He came home to Australia a few years later to do SCROOGE, a wonderful production which sadly flopped but he was equally glorious in that.
The scenery in the opening is just stunning! One of the most impressive I ve ever seen! 👏👏👏
Mr Herman - I hope your enjoying musical theater heaven wherever that is - because we continue to thrill at one of the greatest musical scores ever written!
